This strawberry and blackberry smoothie is a refreshing and healthy treat that is so easy to make, made with only a few simple ingredients and ready in 5 minutes or less.
Why you will love this recipe
- Ready in minutes – smoothies are so fast to make! Simply measure out the minimal ingredients and blend. Smoothies are great any time of day and are the perfect on the go meal.
- Simple ingredients – this smoothie is made with just 7 ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry or freezer. This blackberry strawberry smoothie is high in protein and made strawberries and blackberries that are low in sugar and super easy to find.
- Easily customizable – this smoothie is amazing as is, but it is also the perfect base for any changes or additions you may want such. Add some frozen banana or oatmeal for an even thicker smoothie or some chocolate chips for that sweet tooth. You could also add veggies such as spinach, cauliflower rice or kale to get in a serving of veggies. Swap out the berries for whatever you have on hand for a delicious change in flavor.
Ingredients
- Strawberries – I recommend using frozen strawberries for this recipe. They are ready to use (no need to cut the tops off or wash them) and you don’t have to worry about them spoiling in the fridge. I also love and recommend using frozen strawberries because they help to create a super smooth and creamy smoothie that is nice and cold (which is my favorite way to enjoy them). If you are going to use fresh strawberries, be sure to wash them, cut off the leaves at the top and add 1/2 – 1 cup of ice to help create the same texture.
- Blackberries – I prefer to use frozen blackberries for the same reasons as the strawberries. Frozen berries add a creaminess to the smoothie when blended up. If you only have fresh blackberries, you can use those too, just be sure to add a handful of ice to the blender as well!
- Greek yogurt (regular or dairy free) – the addition of yogurt in this blackberry and strawberry smoothie adds protein and helps to create a super smooth and creamy consistency.
- Dairy free milk (or water) – use any kind of milk you have on hand, or you could also use water. To keep this recipe vegan and dairy free, use nondairy milk such as almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, flax milk, coconut milk and a dairy free yogurt. If you are not dairy free, you can use regular milk here.
- Protein powder (vanilla) – protein powder adds some easy protein to this delicious strawberry blackberry smoothie recipe and provides a bit more sweetness. It’s a great addition for breakfast or as a post-workout snack as it helps make the smoothie filling. I recommend using a vegan protein powder since it tends to help thicken the smoothies, but you can use whatever you have on hand. Note: If you are not using protein powder or are using an unsweetened protein, add some honey or maple syrup to sweeten the smoothie.
- Almond butter (or any nut butter you have) – the almond butter adds some filling healthy fats, protein and also helps make it super creamy and delicious. You can use any nut or seed butter you have on hand though. Peanut butter, tahini, sunbutter, cashew butter will all work well here.
- Honey or maple syrup (optional) – if you are not using a sweetened protein powder, I would recommend adding a little bit of sweetness with either honey or maple syrup. If you want to keep the sugars down, you can omit this, but I prefer the flavor with a little added sweetener. You could also use pitted medjool dates, dried figs or a nice ripe banana instead.
How to make strawberry blackberry smoothie
- Start by measuring out the ingredients into a blender in the order listed.
- Blend on high until smooth.
Top tips
- You can use all frozen fruit or a variety of fresh and frozen. For the best texture and thicker, creamier consistency, I recommend using all frozen fruit. If you want to use fresh fruit, be sure to add about 1 cup of ice and reduce the dairy free milk or water to 1/4 cup.
- Make this a strawberry blackberry banana smoothie bowl by adding half a banana. This banana will really make this smoothie thick and creamy and add some additional natural sweetness.
- If you don’t have any strawberries or blackberries, you can substitute any combination of berries or fruits such as: banana, mango, raspberries, blueberries or even dark sweet cherries.
- The protein powder adds thickness and sweetness to the smoothie. If you are not using protein powder or if your protein powder is not sweetened, I recommend adding 1-2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup (or 1 or 2 pitted dates).
- If you are using a whey-based protein or collagen peptides, you can add about ¼ cup of oats to help keep the thickness consistency of the smoothie or you can use less water/milk.
Other additions
- Sweetness – Add a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup, 1-2 dates (pitted), banana, strawberries or dark sweet cherries for sweetness.
- Veggies – Add 1/2 cup of spinach, kale, carrots or steamed beets to get some veggies in this smoothie.
- Creaminess – Add 1/2 avocado, 1/2 banana, 1/4 cup oats, nuts or seeds, coconut milk (canned) or coconut butter.
- Spices – cinnamon, pumpkin spice, ginger

Common questions
Is this blackberry strawberry smoothie healthy?
This strawberry and blackberry smoothie is full of fiber, protein, and healthy fats. The perfect healthy treat loaded with vitamin C, magnesium, antioxidants, and fiber. This smoothie recipe is well balanced compared to a smoothie you would buy premade or from your favorite smoothie shop or coffee shop.
Most smoothies from your local shops are loaded with added sugar and lack of fiber since they typically use fruit juice as the base of the smoothie instead of the actual fruit. Additionally, using dairy free milk instead of juice helps to keep the sugars in check and the added protein, fiber and healthy fats make this blackberry strawberry smoothie more filling and satisfying.
How to make this smoothie more filling?
- Fiber – the fruits in this smoothie recipe already contain a lot of fiber. If you are looking to add more, you could add about 1/2 cup veggies such as spinach, kale, zucchini, beets, carrots or 1/4 – 1/2 cup of rolled oats to increase the fiber.
- Protein – this smoothie already has a good amount of protein from the protein powder, yogurt, and almond butter, but can be increased by adding hemp hearts, collagen peptides (not vegan). Be sure to check out all my favorite ways to add protein to smoothies.
- Healthy fats – healthy fats can help to really make a smoothie more satisfying. This recipe already has nut butter for healthy fats, but you could also add avocado, use full fat yogurt or canned coconut milk for more healthy fats.
Can you use fresh berries in this smoothie?
Yes, you can use fresh fruit in this strawberry blackberry smoothie. If you aren’t going to use at least one frozen fruit, I recommend adding ice to the smoothie. Simply add 1/2 – 1 cup ice to the smoothie to help thicken it and make it super cold and refreshing.
You can also freeze fresh fruit at home to use later in smoothies. Learn how to freeze fruit for smoothies.
Can I make this a blackberry strawberry banana smoothie by adding a banana?
Yes, a banana would be a perfect addition to this smoothie. Add 1/2 – 1 full banana to help thicken the smoothie and also add some natural sweetness. The banana will also boost the nutrients and potassium of the drink.
Can you make this without yogurt?
Yes, you can make this blackberry and strawberry smoothie without yogurt by simply omitting the yogurt and increasing the dairy free milk from 1/2 cup to 1 cup. If you’re looking to keep a thick and creamy smoothie, you could add 1/4 cup of oats or 1/4 of an avocado in place of the yogurt.
How to make this smoothie without protein powder?
The protein powder helps add balance to this smoothie by adding protein and additional sweetness. However, it can be omitted if you do not have it on hand or would rather not use it. To omit the protein powder, I would add ¼ cup of rolled oats plus 1-2 tablespoons of honey, maple syrup or 1-2 pitted medjool dates.
If you are looking to increase the protein in this smoothie without using protein powder, you can add hemp hearts or increase the nut butter or yogurt. Be sure to read my article for more ways to increase the protein in your smoothie.
How to wash blackberries
Washing blackberries is super simple. To wash any fresh berry, I like to use a mixture of 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 3-4 cups of water. Let the berries soak for about 5 minutes then rinse with clean water. Allow the berries to dry off on a clean kitchen towel before storing in the fridge.
How to freeze blackberries
- Start by washing the blackberries and letting them dry completely. See the step above on How to wash blackberries.
- Next, place the berries flat on a parchment paper or wax paper lined baking sheet. Freeze until solid (4-8+ hours).
- Once frozen, transfer the frozen berries to a freezer safe bag or container. Frozen berries last at least 6 months in the freezer.

Can you prep this smoothie in advance?
Yes, you can prep this smoothie up to 24 hours in advance. Be sure to keep it in the fridge in an airtight cup or container. Give it a quick stir and enjoy right out of the fridge or blend it up with a few cubes of ice to make it ice cold before enjoying.
You can also make freezer prep bags to prep this smoothie even further in advance. Measure out all the ingredients (except the liquid) into a freezer safe bag or container. When you are ready to make the smoothie, simply dump the contents of the smoothie prepped bag into the blender, add the liquid and blend. No measuring required.
Storing leftovers
Fridge – You can store any leftover smoothie in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
Freezer – Freeze leftover strawberry and blackberry smoothie in the freezer for up to a month once blended up. You can pour any leftover smoothie into an ice cube mold or into a Soupercube mold to freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer safe bag or container (I like to use Stasher bags for this). When you are ready to enjoy, you can blend the cubes into a different smoothie for more flavor or blend the cubes together with some milk for a quick smoothie without any added ingredients.
I also like to make smoothie popsicles using popsicle freezer molds. Perfect on a hot summer day.
