Why you will love this recipe

  • Easy to make – smoothies are so easy to make and the perfect on the go breakfast. All you have to do is measure out the  ingredients into the blender and blend. So simple!
  • Refreshing and creamy – the frozen mango with Greek yogurt really create a super thick and creamy smoothie.
  • Simple ingredients – there are just 5 ingredients to this mango blackberry smoothie and it can even be made dairy free if needed. The blackberries in this recipe help to make the smoothie slightly tangy and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Ingredients

  • Mango – mango is naturally sweet and pairs perfectly with blackberries. I recommend using frozen mango to help create the creamiest, thickest smoothie. Frozen mangos are also so much easier to use because you don’t have to cut the mango up, it’s already ready to go. If you are going to use fresh mango, add ½ cup of ice to help create that creamy consistency.
  • Blackberries – I recommend that you use frozen blackberries or freeze them yourself for smoothies. Frozen berries helps to make the smoothie creamy and help make it cold (which to me makes the smoothie more refreshing and delicious). If you only have fresh blackberries, add about ¼-1/2 cup of ice (just a handful) and reduce the dairy free milk by ¼ cup.
  • Honey – honey helps to naturally sweeten the smoothie and add just the perfect amount of sweetness to the smoothie without it being overpowering.
  • Dairy free milk – use whatever milk you have on hand – almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, flax milk or even regular milk if you don’t have dairy free. You can also use water if you don’t have milk on hand.
  • Greek yogurt (regular or dairy free) – the yogurt really helps to create a super creamy consistency in the smoothie and also help to add protein to the smoothie.

How to make mango blackberry smoothies

  • Measure out all the ingredients in a high speed blender.
  • Blend on high (about 1 minute) until smooth.

Top tips

  • Use frozen fruit for best texture. Frozen fruit blends up and creates the perfect creamy consistency without the need for added ice. If you need to use fresh fruit, add ½-1 cup of ice (and reduce the milk by ¼ cup) to create the same consistency.
  • This smoothie is very thick and creamy and would be great as a mango blackberry smoothie bowl as well. Add your favorite toppings and eat with a spoon from a bowl.
  • Be sure to use a high speed blender to ensure that the blackberry seeds get pulverized (so they don’t get stuck in your teeth or back of your throat). If you don’t have a high speed blender, use blueberries, raspberries or strawberries in place of the blackberries.

Common questions

How to make this smoothie more filling

This smoothie is very thick and filling especially if you decide to use a greek style yogurt. The yogurt is full of protein and if you use a higher fat yogurt, it’s also a good source of healthy fats. The blackberries are a great source of fiber which is very filling. To make it more filling, you can add a healthy fat, more protein or more fiber (or a combination of these).

  • Healthy fats: Add a tablespoon or two of nuts, seeds, nut butter (like almond butter or cashew butter), seed butter (like sunbutter or tahini), hemp hearts, half an avocado, or coconut milk (canned) or coconut flakes
  • More protein: Using a greek yogurt will add a good amount of protein but you could also add protein powder, collagen peptides, hemp hearts or oats
  • More fiber: Add more fiber with chia seeds, ground flax seeds, oats, veggies, beans (black or white beans) or more berries

Note that adding more ingredients, especially things like chia seeds, ground flax, oats, veggies or vegan protein powder could require more milk (or some water) to help thin out the smoothie to the same consistency. I would start with 1/4 cup of milk or water.

Can you use fresh fruit in this smoothie

Yes you can use fresh fruit in the smoothie if needed.  I typically prefer frozen fruit because it’s easy to keep on hand, doesn’t spoil quickly and helps to make the smoothie thick, creamy and cold when blended. If you are using fresh fruit, add a cup of ice and reduce the milk by 1/4 cup.

Can you use other berries in this smoothie?

Yes! If you don’t have blackberries or don’t care for the seeds, you can use strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or even cherries in place of the blackberries.

What if you don’t have mango?

If you don’t have mango, you can replace the mango with frozen banana for an equally creamy and sweet smoothie.

Can you prep smoothies in advance?

Yes! You can prep this mango blackberry smoothie up to 24 hours in advance. Store it in an airtight cup in the fridge.

If you need to make this smoothie even further in advance, I recommend making smoothie packs or pre-blending the smoothie and making smoothie cubes or freezing the smoothie in a mason jar for later. Check out all the tips on how to prep smoothies in advance.

Storing leftover smoothie

  • Fridge: You can store leftover mango smoothie in the fridge for up to 24 hours in a well sealed container. The smoothie won’t be quite as cold as using frozen fruit, so you may want to blend it with a handful of ice before enjoying the leftovers.
  • Freezer: You can freeze leftover blackberry and mango smoothie into ice cubes or even into popsicles to enjoy later. If you choose to make smoothie cubes, you can use those cubes in other smoothies instead of ice or blend them with milk and a handful of fruit for a new smoothie.

Substitutions

  • Mango – you can replace the mango with frozen banana or avocado (plus some more honey or maple syrup) or more Greek yogurt (with more honey or maple syrup).
  • Blackberries – if you don’t have blackberries, you can also use blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or dark sweet cherries in place of the blackberries.
  • Honey – you can use honey or maple syrup to sweeten the smoothie. Another great option is to use 1-2 pitted medjool dates.
  • Dairy free milk – use any milk you have on hand (dairy free or regular milk). If you don’t have milk on hand, you can use water.
  • Greek yogurt – using a Greek style yogurt (regular or dairy free) will help to thicken the smoothie. You can also use regular yogurt if needed. If you don’t have Greek yogurt, you can add a serving of your favorite protein powder or ¼ cup of rolled oats.
