Why you will love this smoothie

  • Easy to make – this smoothie can come together in less than 5 minutes. Simply measure out the ingredients into a blender and blend. To make this smoothie come together even faster you can put together a smoothie freezer pack and prep it in advance.
  • Easy to find ingredients – there are just 6 simple ingredients to make this strawberry banana raspberry smoothie. All the ingredients you can find at your local grocery store, you may even have them on hand right now.
  • Kid and adult approved – the creamy, thick, and delicious blend of fruits is a flavor everyone will enjoy. Serve this as a healthy breakfast or snack perfect for kids and adults.

Ingredients

  • Strawberries – strawberries add sweetness to the smoothie. To get a thick and creamy smoothie texture it is best to use frozen strawberries. If you do not have frozen strawberries, fresh will work. Just be sure to include 1/2 cup of ice to help mimic the frozen strawberry consistency.
  • Raspberries – the tartness of the raspberries pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the banana and strawberries. Frozen raspberries work best with this recipe to help thicken the smoothie. If you don’t have frozen raspberries, fresh works along with 1/4 cup of ice.
  • Banana – the banana adds natural sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie. The riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be. If you can freeze the banana, it will add extra creaminess.
  • Almond milk – while I use almond milk, you can use any dairy or nondairy milk you prefer.  Almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, flax milk. You can use coconut milk for a tropical twist.
  • Oats – the oats help to bring a thick and creamy texture to the raspberry banana smoothie. The oats also add a great source of fiber and protein to help keep you full. Use either rolled oats or quick oats, I do not recommend using steel cut oats.
  • Chia seeds – chia seeds are full of fiber and help to absorb the liquid and thicken the smoothie. If you don’t have a high-speed blender, I recommend using ground chia seeds. If you don’t have chia seeds, you can use flax seeds.

Top Tips

To get the best texture and thick consistency out of this recipe, you will want to use frozen fruit, including the banana. If you only have fresh fruit and have time to plan in advance, you could prep and freeze the fruits overnight by following this smoothie fruit freezing guide. Otherwise, you can use fresh fruit, just be sure to add some ice to the blender as well.

To blend chia seeds you need a good high-power blender. If you do not own a high-powered blender, no problem, you can use ground chia seeds instead. Ground chia seeds are chia seeds that have been ground down into powder. Although they are ground down, they still help to thicken the smoothies and are a great source of fiber and healthy fats. Bonus, you don’t get seeds stuck in your teeth.

Other additions

The strawberry raspberry banana smoothie is perfect as is, but you can easily customize it to your taste and preference. Use some of the below additions to modify your smoothie.

  • Nuts or seeds – Add a handful of almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds to the smoothie for healthy fats and to make the smoothie extra creamy.
  • Nut butter – 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter can also add healthy fats to your smoothie. Almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter, tahini, or sunbutter (allergy free option) would work.
  • Protein powder or collagen peptides – Adding protein to the smoothie can help to make it more filling and more of a meal. Using vegan protein powder can also help thicken the smoothie and make it even creamier.
  • Veggies – You can add 1/4 – 1/2 cup of frozen cauliflower rice, fresh or frozen spinach, kale, zucchini or steamed beets to get in a serving of vegetables that will disappear behind the flavors of the fruit.

Common questions

Strawberry raspberry banana smoothie benefits

This strawberry raspberry banana smoothie has so many benefits because it is as nutrient packed as it is delicious. The strawberries, banana and raspberries are rich in vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and potassium. Additionally, the chia seeds and oats are rich in fiber and the oats also contain added protein and are loaded with vitamins, and minerals.

Why are frozen strawberries better for smoothies?

Frozen strawberries when blended help create a thick, creamy, and chilled smoothie consistency. Thick chilled smoothies are perfect on hot summer days or can be made into smoothie bowls with a variety of toppings like chocolate chips, nuts, nut butter, or granola.

If you don’t have frozen strawberries, you can achieve the same thick and creamy texture by blending fresh strawberries with 1/2 – 1 cup of ice.

Is a strawberry smoothie better with milk or water?

Smoothies made with milk have a creamier consistency than smoothies made with water or juice. Milk also usually contains less sugar than juice and has added protein and calcium. Smoothies made with water or juice tend to have more of a liquid consistency.

So, if you are looking for a smoothie that is creamy, has less sugar than juice, and has added calcium and protein, use milk. Milk options such as almond milk, oats milk, flax milk, cashew milk or if you aren’t dairy free regular milk will work.

Can you use other berries in this smoothie?

Yes! This strawberry banana raspberry smoothie is extremely delicious as is, but you can also add or swap berries. Other berries and fruits that would work great with this smoothie are blueberries, blackberries, cherries, mango, peaches or acai.

This raspberry banana smoothie can be pre-made up to 24 hours in advance and stored in the fridge in an airtight container. You can simply stir before enjoying or blend with a hand full of ice cubes to help thicken and chill.

Additionally, you can make meal prep smoothie packs by measuring out all ingredients except the milk in a freezer safe bag and store it for up to 3 months. When you want to enjoy a strawberry raspberry banana smoothie, simply dump the smoothie pack into a blender, add milk and blend.

Storing leftovers

If you are not finishing your raspberry banana smoothie, you have a few options to store the leftovers. You can store the leftover smoothie in the fridge for up to 24 hours. However, if you are not going to have the leftover smoothie in the next 24 hours you should freeze it.

To freeze leftover smoothie, you can store it in a freezer safe container like a mason jar, reusable pouch or pour it into ice cube trays or soupercubes. When you are ready to enjoy the smoothie, you can pull the mason jar or reusable pouch out of the freezer and allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight. For the ice cube and soupercubes simply blend them with some milk. Another great option is to pour the leftover smoothie into popsicle molds to enjoy all summer long.

Substitutions

  • Strawberries – You can use fresh or frozen strawberries, but if you don’t have strawberries, you can use any type of berry you enjoy. Frozen blueberries, blackberries or frozen sweet dark cherries would be great here. If you are using fresh berries like fresh strawberries, be sure to use 1/2 cup of ice to mimic the same texture as frozen berries.
  • Raspberries – You can use any berries you have on hand such as blackberries or blueberries. You could also double the strawberries and omit the raspberries.
  • Banana – A fresh or frozen banana will work here. If you don’t have a banana, you could substitute an avocado or Greek yogurt. Additionally, you could use canned coconut milk here for a tropical twist. With any of these substitutions, you may also decide to add something sweet like honey or maple syrup (1-2 tablespoons) to sweeten the smoothie since the banana really helps to add sweetness.
  • Almond milk – Any kind of milk will work here including almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, flax milk or regular dairy milk. Alternatively, you can use water or coconut water.
  • Oats – Rolled or quick oats will work here but I do not recommend steel cut oats. If you don’t have oats available you could use Greek yogurt, frozen cauliflower rice, or frozen spinach in place of the oats to help thicken the smoothie.
  • Chia seeds – If you have a weak blender, you can use ground chia seeds as an alternative to chia seeds. Additionally, you could also use flax seeds or simply omit the chia seeds.
