Why you will love this recipe

  • Everyone in the family will love it – you cannot go wrong with this thick and creamy smoothie that is packed with tropical fruit flavors that immediately makes you feel like you are on vacation. Both kids and adults will love this smoothie that drinks more like a milkshake.
  • A simple, healthy breakfast or snack – made with just 5 simple ingredients, this strawberry banana mango smoothie is such a great option for quick and easy breakfasts or the perfect mid-afternoon snack.
  • Packed with protein – this banana mango strawberry smoothie is so filling thanks to the addition of protein. This makes it a more filling breakfast or even a great post workout meal!

Ingredients

  • Frozen strawberries – strawberries add a layer of natural sweetness to the smoothie and also help to contribute to the pink color. I recommend using frozen strawberries as they are easy to keep on hand and are more budget friendly since you don’t have to worry about them going bad in the fridge in just a few days. If you are using fresh strawberries, add about 1/4 cup of ice to get the same texture.
  • Frozen mango – mango adds so much natural sweetness to the smoothie and also contributes to the tropical flavor! I recommend frozen mango because it’s much less time consuming to use frozen mango that is already chopped into bite size chunks than to cut a mango up. If you want to use fresh mango, add about 1/4 cup of ice to help create the same texture.
  • Frozen banana – frozen banana really help to create a super thick and creamy smoothie. Bananas are easy to freeze (just peel them, break them into pieces or cut into coins and freeze on a baking sheet until frozen). You can use fresh banana but the texture won’t be quite the same.
  • Dairy free milk – use your favorite dairy free milk in this recipe. I like using cashew milk or coconut milk for this recipe but you could also use almond milk, oat milk, flax milk, etc. If you are not dairy free, use regular milk.
  • Protein powder – I recommend a vegan vanilla protein powder for this strawberry banana mango smoothie. The vanilla will add a hint of sweetness that will amplify the tropical flavors and also allow the fruit to shine as the main ingredient. If you are using whey protein, the smoothie won’t be quite as creamy so you can use a little less milk (start with 3/4 of a cup) or you can add about 1/4 cup of rolled oats to get the same texture.  If you are using unsweetened protein powder or collagen peptides with no flavor, you may need to add just a touch of honey or maple syrup for sweetness.

How to make a strawberry banana mango smoothie

  • Measure out all the ingredients into your blender.
  • Blend on high until smooth. Pour into a cup or enjoy as a smoothie bowl.

Top tips

  • The sweetness of the smoothie really comes from the fruit. The riper the bananas and mango, the sweeter the taste. Wait until your bananas are really ripe before freezing them for the sweetest smoothie.
  • If you only have fresh fruit but want really thick and creamy smoothies, freeze your fruit the night before. Check out all my tips on how to easily freeze fruit for smoothies.
  • If you want a thinner smoothie, add a little more dairy free milk before blending. This smoothie is already pretty thick and creamy but if you wanted it to be even creamier, you can slightly reduce the liquid or add something like oats (about 1/4 cup) to make it even creamier.

Other additions

  • Chia seeds or ground flax seeds – both chia seeds and ground flax add healthy fats and fiber and also help to thicken it naturally. Adding one or both of these can help to make the smoothie even more filling.
  • Vegetables – you can easily hide some veggies in this smoothie. Add some frozen cauliflower rice (this won’t change the color at all) or add some fresh or frozen spinach, kale, zucchini or beets. These will all change the color of the smoothie slightly.
  • Creaminess – add 1/2 and avocado or about 1/2 cup of yogurt (regular or Greek) to make the smoothie even creamier. Note that adding avocado or yogurt may change the balance of natural sweetness, so you may want to add just a drizzle of maple syrup or honey as well.
  • Fresh herbs – add a little fresh mint or basil to change up the flavor while still making a really flavorful smoothie.

Common questions

Can you make this strawberry banana mango smoothie into a smoothie bowl

It’s really easy to make this into a mango strawberry banana smoothie bowl since this smoothie is already very thick and creamy. Simply pour into a bowl instead of a glass and add your favorite toppings.

Many people talk about the importance of chewing your food (which you can lose when drinking your meal) so making this into a smoothie bowl is a great way to enjoy a smoothie but also chew your food.

Here are some great topping choices for this smoothie bowl

  • Fresh fruit – add some sliced banana, strawberries, mango, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, pineapple to this smoothie bowl.
  • Nuts or seeds – chop some cashews, almonds, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or macadamia nuts.
  • Nut butter or seed butter – drizzle this mango banana strawberry smoothie bowl with almond butter, tahini, cashew butter, sunbutter or coconut butter.
  • Coconut flakes – regular or toasted.
  • Whipped cream – make this into a real dessert by adding some whipped cream (or whipped coconut cream) on top.

Can you double or triple this smoothie recipe

Yes! It’s very easy to double or triple this smoothie recipe if you have a large blender. If you are working with bullet style blenders, you will want to make this one batch at a time to ensure you don’t overload the blender.

Can you use fresh mango in this smoothie

If you have fresh mango on hand and want to use it instead of frozen you can. If you have time to prep ahead, I recommend freezing the mango the night before (see all my tips of freezing fresh fruit for smoothies).

If you don’t have time to freeze it in advance, you can simply add about 1/4 cup of ice to the smoothie as well to help create the same texture and get the smoothie super cold and refreshing.

What is the best way to store leftover smoothies

Smoothies are really best when enjoyed immediately. However, there may be times where you are left with some leftover smoothie that you don’t want to waste.

My favorite way to save leftover smoothie is to pour it into ice cube molds or make popsicles. The popsicles are a great choice because they can be enjoyed right out of the freezer and are a great way to cool off in the summer.

If you decide to pour the smoothie into ice cube trays, you can use those smoothie cubes in other smoothies or blend them up with some milk or coconut water to make a new smoothie.

How to make a creamy smoothie without yogurt

Here are a few tips on how to make super creamy smoothies:

  • Use frozen fruit – frozen fruit blends up so much better than fresh fruit and helps to make a really thick smoothie, which when combined with the right other ingredients makes the smoothie really creamy.
  • Add frozen banana, frozen mango, avocado – when blended these ingredients really help to create a really thick and creamy texture in smoothies. Add one, two or all three of these ingredients to create a really creamy texture.
  • Don’t use too much liquid – one way to ensure that your smoothie will be creamy is to only use enough liquid to blend the smoothie. If your consistency seems too runny, add more of the other ingredients listed here to help thicken it up.
  • Add vegan protein powder, rolled oats, chia seeds, ground flax seeds – these ingredients all help to absorb excess liquid and really make the smoothie super creamy. I really recommend adding vegan protein powder to most smoothies because not only does it add protein but it also helps to create a really creamy consistency.
  • Nuts, seeds, nut butter, coconut, coconut butter – nuts and seeds can help to thicken the smoothie and also create a really creamy consistency when added.

This mango strawberry banana smoothie has so many ingredients that help to make it super creamy without yogurt. Some great options to thicken this smoothie would be coconut flakes, cashews or sunbutter for a nut free option.

What is the best liquid for smoothies?

Dairy free milk (like almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, coconut milk) is a very popular liquid for smoothies. These are easy to keep on hand and are unsweetened, allowing the fruit to really be the star.

The use of coconut water is also a great option for a tropical twist as it is packed with electrolytes and doesn’t have any added sugars or sweeteners. Coconut water is great to use in post workout smoothies or if you enjoy being out in the sun all day.

Some people like to add fruit juice (like orange juice, apple juice, etc.) in smoothies. Using juice can quickly increase the sugars in the smoothie.

This is a personal preference but I like to use unsweetened dairy free milk or coconut water over adding more sugar with juice.

How to tell if a mango is ripe

Mangos, like avocado and peaches, get soft to the touch when they are ripe. When you press into the mango (gently) the mango should feel soft but still provide a little resistance. A ripe mango will never feel rock hard.

Note: You don’t want to let the mango go too far where it feels very soft and squishy when you press it, If the mango gets overripe, it may taste sour or fermented.

If you have a mango you are trying to ripen quickly, store it around bananas or even put it in a paper bag with some bananas to quicken the ripening time.

What fruits go well with mango?

Mangos are a very tropical tasting fruit that pair well with just about any fruit. Some great combinations include:

  • Berries – strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries
  • Tropical fruits – banana, pineapple, kiwi, pomegranate
  • Stone fruits – cherries, peaches, nectarines
  • Citrus fruits – oranges, lime, lemon

Storing leftovers

  • Fridge – You can store leftover mango strawberry banana smoothie in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Stir the smoothie well before enjoying out of the fridge. I recommend adding a few cubes of ice and reblending for the best texture.
  • Freezer – Pour the smoothie into ice cube trays or make popsicles!

Substitutions

  • Frozen strawberries – replace the strawberries with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, dark sweet cherries.
  • Mango – replace the mango with more banana (use a whole banana instead of half) or you can use whatever other fruit you love here like cherries, pineapple, peaches, berries, etc.
  • Banana – banana adds sweetness to the smoothie. If you don’t like bananas or don’t have any, double the mango instead. You can also use some avocado or yogurt, just be sure to add some sweetness with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if needed.
  • Dairy free milk – use any milk you have on hand including regular milk. You could also use coconut water, canned coconut milk or water with a tablespoon of nut butter.
  • Protein powder – use whatever protein powder you love here. If you don’t want to use protein powder, add about 1/4 cup of rolled oats or 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. If you want to add protein but don’t have protein powder, check out this article on other ways to add protein to smoothies.
