Why you will love this recipe

  • Insanely delicious – air fryer baked apples are so delicious and smell amazing as they are baking up. The sweet, tender apples topped with either oats or a paleo crumble are just the perfect fall or winter dessert, especially when topped with ice cream, whipped cream or even vanilla yogurt!
  • Quick and easy – this air fryer apples recipe would be perfect for beginners! The apples are easy to prepare (just slice and scoop out the seeds) and this recipe is pretty fool proof since the air fryer does most of the work!
  • Healthy sweet snack or dessert – the natural sweetness of the apples is intensified when baked in the air fryer, especially when paired with a slightly sweet maple syrup crumb topping. You will find yourself making these regularly all fall and winter!
  • Naturally gluten free and vegan – these healthy baked apples in the air fryer have a few ingredients and fit almost any diet. If you are grain free, you can try the paleo crumble topping instead of the oat topping!
  • Budget friendly! This recipe cost under $1.50 for 2 servings! You can easily make these in the oven for company if you are feeding a large crowd on a budget!
Ingredients to make air fryer baked apples.

Ingredients

Apples – be sure to use a baking apple so that the apples don’t fall apart. My favorite option is pink lady’s but fujis would be great too!

Cinnamon – cinnamon helps to elevate the flavor of the apples and helps the kitchen smell amazing as they are baking in the air fryer.

Oat Crumble

  • Rolled oats – rolled oats give that classic crumble texture. It’s like topping the apples with granola!
  • Maple syrup – maple syrup is the perfect sweetener for this crumble, it’s easy to find and I always have it on hand. Using a liquid sweetener is important as it helps to ensure the oats stick together when baking.
  • Avocado oil (or olive oil or melted coconut oil) – this helps to coat the oats and ensure they get crispy but don’t burn.
  • Cinnamon – gives the crumble a distinct fall flavor and elevates the crumble!
  • Pinch Salt – makes all the flavors pop even more! It’s not much salt but just enough to take the crumble to the next level!

Paleo Crumble

  • Almond flour – almond flour replaces the oats in a typical crumble. The almond flour makes more of a crust than a crumble but the end result is equally as delicious!
  • Maple syrup – maple syrup helps to create a sticky crumble crust for the almond flour and helps to sweeten the crumble.
  • Cinnamon – gives the crumble a distinct fall flavor and elevates the crumble!
  • Pinch Salt – makes all the flavors pop even more! It’s not much salt but just enough to take the crumble to the next level!

How to make air fryer baked apples

Start by cutting the apple in half at the stem.

Apple sliced in half on cutting board.

Use a spoon and scoop out the seeds in the center. Try not to go too deep, all you are trying to do is get the seeds out.  Also if needed, use a knife to remove any of the stem that may be left on the apples.

Spoon removing the seeds from the apple.

Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon.

In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for the crumble.

Spoon the crumble over the apples, dividing it evenly.

Bake in air fryer at 350F for 10 minutes for medium sized apples. You may need to cook them for longer if you have large apples.

Remove from the air fryer carefully (they are hot) and enjoy after allowing to cool slightly.

Top tips

  • Use a spoon to remove the seeds and make a small well for the apple crisp topping to rest. Be sure not to go too deep into the apple as you are removing the seeds, just 1/2 inch or so.
  • Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon before adding the crumble topping so the entire apple has that sweet cinnamon apple flavor.
  • The apple comes away from the skin as you bite down. If you don’t love the skin or have kids that are picky, the skin is pretty easy to remove once cooked. No need to peel the apples before baking in the air fryer.
  • All air fryers have different wattages so the cooking time may be different for each brand. I would start checking the topping at 10 minutes to ensure it doesn’t start to burn. You can always leave the apples in the hot air fryer so they can continue to cook in the residual heat.

Storing leftover air fryer apples

Fridge: Store leftover air fryer apples in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can enjoy them cold or reheat in the microwave or air fryer (2-3 minutes at 350F).

Freezer: I do not recommend freezing air fryer baked apples as the apples will get soggy when defrosting.

Substitutions

  • Apples – you can also make this recipe with pears. Be sure the pears are not overly ripe or they will break down when cooking.
  • Cinnamon – you could also use apple pie spice blend or pumpkin pie spice blend if needed.
  • Oats – you can also make this with almond flour, see paleo crumble ingredients.
  • Maple syrup – date syrup would be a great option if you don’t have maple syrup. Dates give a slightly caramel flavor when baked. You could also use honey but the flavor would be slightly different (and not vegan).
  • Avocado oil – you can use extra virgin olive oil, melted coconut oil or even melted butter or ghee in place of the avocado oil. I like avocado oil because it’s neutral tasting and I always have it on hand.
  • Almond flour – if you need a nut free and grain free option, you can make your own sunflower seed flour in place of almond flour. Simply grind up roasted sunflower seeds in a high speed blender until they resemble sand.
