Rich, flavorful, and naturally sweetened with medjool dates, this homemade apple butter is made with just four ingredients and ready in about an hour. Perfect for spreading on toast, stirring into yogurt or oatmeal, or adding to baked goods for a burst of fall flavor.

Add the apples, dates, cinnamon, cloves and water to a medium pot over medium heat. Cover
2 pounds apples, 2 Medjool dates, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves, ¼ cup water
Cook covered for 20 minutes.
Stir and continue to cook covered for additional 20 minutes turning the heat to medium low.
Blend with immersion blender (off the heat) or in a high speed blender (carefully, remember this is hot).
Return to the stove and allow to cook, uncovered over medium low heat, 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Let cool completely on stove if possible. Store covered in glass mason jar in fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
Did you know you can also use applesauce instead of peeling apples? This cuts down on the cooking time too. Replace the apples with 4 cups of unsweetened apple sauce. Cut the cooking time with the dates and spices down to 15 minutes before blending the mixture and cooking off the remaining liquid (5-10 minutes over low heat). This entire process should take less than 30 minutes. Make apple butter in the slow cooker:
Add apples, water, pitted dates, cinnamon and cloves to the slow cooker and cook on high for 2 hours with the lid on.
Remove the lid, blend with an immersion blender or a high speed blender.
Turn the slow cooker to low and cook the blended apple mixture without the lid.
After 1 hour, turn off the slow cooker and allow it to cool down completely.
Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 1 week
