Hey Everyone – My name’s Dave. So far I’ve been behind the scenes here at Pancake Warriors making sure the website is up, functioning, and moving forward technology wise. It’s definitely been a lot of fun this past month getting the site running and learning all the gotcha’s of blogging. Yes, I am a blogging virgin – be easy on me!
My background maybe with technology, but my passion much like Sam, is health and fitness. Prior to meeting Sam my food basically consisted of whey protein, and bland brown rice and chicken – no fun.
Sam opened my eyes to a world where I can eat peanut butter pie and ice cream and not lose the definition I’ve worked so hard for. The girl is a genius and I hope everyone continues to follows Pancake Warriors because we have tons of great ideas in-store. Feel free to even submit a few of your secret guilty pleasure foods to see if Sam can make a healthier version – she loves a challenge.
Since I can remember, it didn’t matter how many hours I put in at the gym, I could not lose my belly. Unlike Sam and her weight dilemmas, my problem wasn’t processed foods – you really can’t get anymore boring and unprocessed than organic chicken and brown rice. My issue was the staple in any weight lifter or fitness enthusiasts kitchen.
Which brings me to my first love, whey protein powder. I mixed whey and casein in everything. It was the only protein powder I ever considered – so many flavors, so many different variations. I didn’t even know anything else existed – plant protein was for vegetarians as far as I was concerned. I eat meat so why would I even think twice? That’s until my stomach couldn’t handle it any longer.
It turns out I have food allergies and maybe you do too! My goals in the gym weren’t being met. I had definition but everything was hidden behind a bloated stomach.
I never really thought about the discomfort I often felt after drinking my protein shake or how my stomach bloated. I did however notice my massive stomach in the mirror which lead me to questionable eating habits. My stomach would swell up and I assumed that I was just never going to get rid of the “belly fat” I had. I often made excuses that it was due to me being full and just having a bad stomach. Little did I know these are all signs of a food allergy.
No Whey For Me
That small discomfort turned into an extreme pain. Stomach pain to the point that one evening I couldn’t move. After a few doctor visits and no real conclusion, I talked to my mom, who is a nurse. We discussed the symptoms I was having and how I felt after I ate certain foods. With her help and Sam’s gentle nudging, I decided to cut foods out of my diet and gradually introduce them back in. Unfortunately, the main culprits were dairy and gluten. Noooooo!
This was inconceivable to me, getting rid of whey protein powder – no way. After about a week of eating practically nothing I started to feel better. I thought I was cured and I ran back to whey and dairy. I was concerned that I wasn’t going to get quality lean protein in my diet without whey. You can’t carry around a pyrex full of chicken everywhere, it’s just not practical. After having the the same issues I knew I had to give whey up!
During my research I found a ton of articles online and I realized I wasn’t alone in my struggles with digesting whey protein. So if you have similar discomfort, pain, or bloating after eating certain foods I encourage you to do some research.
Today I stay away from gluten, and almost all dairy as much as possible. I still eat yogurt. How I love FAGE and plant based protein!

My results from my time in the gym are the best in years and it’s probably due to the fact that I can eat without issues! I look leaner and cut because my body isn’t bloated. Bloating affects more than just your stomach! If you have this same problem then you know what it’s like to work hard and see no results in the mirror. Chances are, the results are there – just hidden behind a food allergy.
Overcoming The Issue
Understand that food allergies can do more than just cause bloat and discomfort. Symptoms range from fatigue, headache, stiffness, to even cold like symptoms, and of course gas. Major cases being death.
Did you know that most adult American’s can’t properly digest dairy? I also read recently that its been estimated that half of the population is allergic to wheat! I shudder at these facts, thinking of how many people live in constant discomfort. I’m happy to say that I am no longer one of them.
We would think that eating clean and being healthy should be enough. But we often forget to listen to our body, and in my case, remove foods that cause issues. Even if that food is technically “clean” that doesn’t necessarily mean our bodies agree with it. It’s taken me a long time to figure this out but, I’ve finally learned and I needed to share in hopes it helps others feel better and achieve their goals.
In all, it took me about three months of trial and error to no longer feel the effects from the foods that were giving me issues.
