Running was my first quest. As far as working out, it was the first thing I mastered. I tackled a ton of physical and emotional barriers in my life with running and let me tell you it wasn’t pretty in the beginning! But that is probably because I was not treating my body with much respect or grace at that time.
I was 20 years old, overweight, and couldn’t breathe. I had been a smoker for several years and wasn’t eating well. I remember when I first quit smoking, it was with the goal to get healthier and get in shape. I quickly realized that I needed to start moving my body more and running was my answer.
I lived out in the country and didn’t have much extra money for a gym membership as a poor college student so I figured running would be my salvation. So I became a road warrior with my dogs in tow. Running soon became my solace. It became less of a chore and something I actually wanted to do. By the time I was finally able to run a mile without stopping I felt like I could conquer anything!
My runs progressed and I found that I was able to sort through a lot of emotional weight on my runs. If I was having a hard or stressful day it would all melt away on that run. When I was buying my first house, I would run the stress off in the gym. I would go through details of the house in my head and it was the only place I had where no one could bother me.
Soon though my body started to rebel. The arch in my right foot started falling on every run, and my place of happiness became a place of torture. I tried everything for a solution; I refused to give up on my happy place. After much trial and error I found a style of shoe that was comfortable and supportive for me. I learned how to run with a barefoot style shoe to accommodate the way I run so my arch doesn’t fall; which is mostly on the front of my foot.
Every once in a while I find a great shoe. However, I’ve had lots of problems with my feet falling asleep in shoes on runs or blisters in the first half mile. But, I wasn’t going to let my shoes get in the way of me running a half marathon – the goal I had originally strived for, for all those years. I thought that was the impossible feat, that only athletes could do that! Boy was I wrong! Crossing the finish line with a smile on my face is still one of my favorite moments of life!! 13.1 baby!
Now I run mostly for fun, and as a way to catch up with my best friend during the week. I remember her first run to the end of her neighborhood without stopping, she literally grinned ear to ear for a week after that. Now that’s our warm up – funny how fast progress happens 🙂 But my shoe problem has still been an issue. I am finding that there are barely any stores around that carry my style of shoe anymore. So I’m stuck settling on what they have in stock or I can order online to find a greater selection. Luckily I have a store like Zappos to order from!
I found out how awesome Zappos customer service was over Christmas this past year when my mom ordered shoes for my step dad and they were too big. She was so excited to find out there was free return shipping, and she could get his right size delivered before he had to leave for travel early the next week. Since Zappos has such a huge inventory of shoes, there is so much variety for me to choose from when looking for my running shoes they have over 1,000 brands. And I can try them on and return them if needed. They have a free 365 return policy! Who else does that?!
I’m not sure about you but this brings so much ease and happiness to my life. The last thing I want is stress over picking out shoes or driving to 10 stores only to be disappointed in every one and since they sell both shoes and other athletic clothing it’s a great one stop shop. If you are anything like me you should try out Zappos for your next athletic purchase. I have to admit I get quite excited when I get a box delivered to my doorstep that includes not only my new running shoes, but also a new sports bra and running capris. I run so much faster when I’m cute 🙂 Did you know that Zappos has more than just shoes?
I continue to be challenged by my running, but never finding my athletic apparel anymore. Running will always be my happy place. Check out the #ZapposBaytoBreakers race this Sunday 5/17/2015!
