Happy Saturday y’all! I taught spin this morning, and Dave decided he wanted to come try the class! I was so surprised that he wanted to come, since the last time he was on a bike was at the beach, and he vowed that bike riding wasn’t for him! Oh man I miss the beach!
I was so excited to have him come to class with me, as he normally stays home and walks the dogs while I’m teaching. We had a great sweaty class, rode for about 50 minutes and I went a little over 14 miles.
I like to teach spin the way I like to ride. I’ve gotten a ton of feedback and most people enjoy the layout of my class, so as long as it works, I’m not changing anything! With that being said, I don’t do a ton of speed work, I mostly have the class crank up the intensity level and get out of their seats – A LOT! There are other instructors at my gym that do a ton of speed work, so I feel like this is a great balance for people to get both styles.
I love doing what I call roller coaster – where you move from seated position to either standing or third position. I like to start these at 8 count intervals and then move to 4 counts during the chorus. I also like to change up going from seated to standing in verse one to seated to third in verse two. Today we did a ton of 3rd position interval work and even dropped it down to a lower hover for a few songs to really get into the quads. Let’s see if Dave can walk tomorrow!!
For me spin, like running, is all about the music. There needs to be a beat to “kick” to, especially when you are counting out intervals. Working with the beat gets everyone on the same page and makes it easier for me as the instructor to give other cues like, “Shoulders back, abs tight” or my favorite “Exercise your cheeks and smile!” instead of “Stand”, “Sit”, and “3rd position”. Today was a theme class, we did throw back songs from the 90’s and 2000’s. I was singing along and dancing the entire time! It’s a fun list and wanted to share it with you in case you are in a major music funk like I have been:)
