Are you a snacker? I am! And I’m constantly looking for ways to get out of the snacking rut. You know what I’m talking about, having the same thing everyday at 3pm to keep the hungry monster at bay until it’s time for dinner.
My go to snack has always been a handful of nuts. They are crunchy, filling, I can eat them slow or on the go and they sit well in my desk drawer (aka I don’t have to walk past the candy jar to get to them). Nuts are such a great snack option, I often recommend adding them for their healthy fats and protein to my nutrition and personal training clients.
But like everything good eating nuts everyday can get, well boring. I was soon looking for another go to snack, only to be let down by other things I tried. I found that keeping pre-portioned bags of nuts in my car, my purse and at my desk helped me get through those sudden hunger cravings and keeping me from turning into hangry Sam. Trust me I’m hard enough on my clients, they don’t need me hangry when I am training them. That could be dangerous 🙂
Nuts are also great to add into salads and into other dishes for an added crunch. I personally love to put chopped nuts in my mashed avocado tuna, but I currently have a new love, Dill Pickle Emerald® Cashews with my mashed tuna avocado. The Dill Pickle flavor is everything I love about pickles, tangy with just a hint of garlic – so good! The Jalepeno flavor is pretty spicy (but in a good way). My favorite flavor was the sriracha – it was everything I love about sriracha, that sweet spicy chili flavor with just a hint of garlic. I could eat the entire bag in one sitting! The salt and pepper would be perfect in trail mix with freshly popped popcorn and semi-sweet chocolate chips. The pepper flavor really stands out, but it’s not overwhelming!
This week I’ve been lucky enough to try all four of these new flavors and let me tell you they are crazy addicting and have taken my snacking to a whole new level. They have also inspired some new food combos like Mexican Taco Salad with Chopped Jalapeno Cashews for crunch and sriracha cashews with hard boiled eggs for an easy exciting on the go snack. Anyone else addicted to eggs and sriracha?
I was worried that the sriracha and jalapeno cashews would be too spicy on their own but they are just the right amount of heat, not enough to burn the tongue but enough to let you know there is some fire there! I could definitely eat the entire bag plus.
