Foods That Make You Fat. They’ve been dubbed as “diet food” but they’re sugar laden, fake foods, filled with unnecessary chemicals and binders and ungodly amounts of sodium. As you can tell, these food products have left anything but a good taste in my mouth. Honestly, in my opinion, these so called healthy diet foods need to die.

Today’s post is bound to offend a few, heck it might even piss a few people off. I get it, you are just trying to lose weight and still want to enjoy your cheesy mac and cheese and your chocolate chip cookies that are now conveniently packaged in 100 calorie packs. Yes I’m talking about Lean Cuisines, 100 calorie packs of just about every junk food known to man, the Special K bars and cereal and all the various chemically laden junk bars trying their best to pass as a protein bar. Personally, I don’t understand how our standards of what real food is have gotten so low.
The reason I have a problem with these “foods” is probably not what you think. Sure I think there are healthier options but honestly, the way these foods are marketed to people, especially women, is setting us up to become fatter, more dependent on the next diet fad and more and more unhappy. Here is what “diet food” often did to me when I would eat them. Oh this is only 100 calories, so I can eat 2. Oh man, I’m still hungry, maybe I should have a small bowl of cereal as well, that was really only 100 calories. Or oh that serving of ice cream was only 100 calories, I deserve more. I’ll just grab another scoop, next thing you know you’ve eaten half the container. Companies depend on you to eat these foods like this, they can sell more and you keep needing that “diet food” next week. Why do we react like this to these “healthy foods”?
Hungry For More
These foods aren’t nourishing the body. Let me repeat that one more time. These foods aren’t nourishing the body. The vitamins, minerals and calories your brain is expecting to receive when it eats these foods is not there. Instead your body is stuck dealing with the shock and onslaught of chemicals and a ton of sugar it has no idea what to do with thus sending it to fat stores. This sends your insulin and hormones out of control. Yes I have heard of people eating Lean Cuisines at lunch and losing a ton of weight. I often wonder what these people look like a year later though. Surviving off of 200 calories in the middle of the day is just setting most people up for failure once their willpower finally runs out and their metabolism is out of whack.
I wish more people would focus their attention on the quality of the food instead of the quantity. Eating 400 calories of nutrient dense amazing food straight from nature is a healthier option over 200 calories of manufactured food like product any day. Period. Exclamation Mark. And guess what, your body will know exactly what to do with the natural food, so it’s less likely to cause inflammation in the body and most likely won’t cause the hormonal and insulin spikes. Your body will once again be able to calm down and regulate itself. Therefore helping you lose weight, naturally. The foods that make you fat are the ones marketed to you that you will lose weight.
Why do I tense up anytime someone mentions popping a Lean Cuisine in the microwave for lunch as a healthy option?
Most of these “healthy meals” are full of starches, isolated soy proteins, MSG (often autoyzed yeast extract), and likely contain GMO modified corn, soy or cottonseed oil. Also there are trans-fat in these food (like most manufactured foods), but because it is under a certain limit, they can still market it as zero trans-fats. Yes, trans-fats appear in nature, they mostly can be found in grass fed beef and grass fed dairy. It’s likely that the trans-fat in these foods are manufactured in a lab. mmm lab fat.
In order to create creamy sauces and flavor without fat, there is a ton of added sugar and starches, which provide empty calories to the meal and all of which your body has no idea what to do with. Often the amount of vegetables in these meals is negligible, if that. Most of the dishes provided are foods that make you fat as they are carbohydrate based, fueling your day on sugar, sugar and more sugar (did I mention sodium?) once everything is done breaking down in your body.
I understand the use of foods like this as a better option than maybe grabbing take-out or something like that. I don’t however agree with how these foods are marketed to people. Besides basically starving and using a ton of will power all day, you are also likely slowing down your metabolism or setting up to binge eat or mindlessly eat later in the day. It’s funny that most of the people I see eating one of these “healthy” frozen meals at lunch are also the people I see sneaking into the break room around 3 looking for something to eat.
Maybe you are thinking well I can’t eat healthy foods on a budget. Well, a can of chickpeas is less than a dollar, a can of quality tuna is about $1.50, avocados are about a dollar. Eggs are about $3 for a dozen. Bananas are less than a dollar a pound, apples and oranges are less than dollar each at Trader Joe’s or on sale at the market. Your average vegan based protein powder is between $1-$2 a scoop. All of these foods are quick, convenient, and guaranteed to fill you up. A much better option than the chemical ridden empty calorie food products being sold to you as a healthy diet food.
So the next time you grab for one of those healthy diet foods, think about what you are putting into your body and realize you deserve much more from your food!
