You may be wondering why I think carb cycling for women is one of the best approaches to fat loss! It is my goal to teach women that demonizing carbs could end up doing their bodies more harm than good. Treating a sweet potato the same as a soda is not the answer. It’s up to you to determine what kind of carbs are right for you and in what amount.
First let’s discuss this term “carb” that we all throw around. Did you know that vegetables, fruit, starch and sugar are all forms of carbohydrates? Each of these foods act very different in the body. When I work with clients, I tend to think of carbs in two ways. Starchy carbs (like pasta, potatoes, bread, quinoa, rice, cakes, cookies, bananas and very sweet fruits) and non-starchy carbs (green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and even some low-sugar fruits like berries, apples and pears). When we are discussing going on a low carb diet, we are generally talking about going on a low starch diet. For the most part you will still be eating a ton of those non-starchy carbs on your low carbohydrate diet.
Did you know that most women require some amount of carbohydrates to function at our best? Although many of us can survive for a short period of time (a few months) on a low carb diet, this type of diet is not typically something most people can stick with for the long term, which ends up being detrimental to our weight loss. Being on a low carb diet for a long period can lead to binging on carbs or rebound weight gain once carbs are reintroduced. Unfortunately most people do not keep off the weight they lose using a low carb method.
However, there are many benefits to eating a low carb diet. This type of eating can train your body to use fat as it’s predominate source of fuel. Reducing your carbs can help you reduce your appetite, since protein and fat tend to be very satiating; you could end up eating fewer calories automatically, leading to weight loss without much effort. However, in the modern world we live in today, eating low carb is not an easy task! So many of our comfort foods are high in carbs, and most of us like to indulge in higher carb foods and beverages that make it very difficult to keep up this low carb diet as a lifestyle.
This is why I utilize carb cycling with my clients. Carb cycling is exactly what it sounds like. We cycle between days of low carbs and days of higher carbs. Carb cycling for women is an extremely effective way to lose fat without feeling deprived. On low carb days, we deplete the stored glycogen (sugar that is stored in our muscles and liver) which forces our bodies to use fat from food or stored body fat for fuel to get through everyday tasks and workouts. On higher carb days, we utilize those carbs as effectively as possible, restoring those glycogen stores and as fuel for workouts!
Paired with intermittent fasting, carb cycling for women can turn you into a fat burning machine 24/7!
