Hi yogis or soon to be yogis!! I am so excited to share with you a great new product that I’ve been using and love! You guys know life is about balance and for me, I tend to always find my balance on my mat. However, not all mats are created equally, especially if you are in a hot yoga studio. I’m not a huge fan of thick mats, I like to feel connected with the ground when I practice. I just love this new Ashram Yoga Mat! It’s great for hot yoga, it doesn’t get slippery when I get sweaty, which lets me get deeper in my poses and I feel more secure when going into balance poses.
During the summer months, I like to practice yoga outside. The heat and humidity is perfect for me to get all those toxins out without having to go too far from home. This mat will be the key to me not sliding around on the deck like I did last year! Although the mat is thin, it provides plenty of cushion so your hands and joints so you’ll have some relief from the ground.
What I love most about this company is how environmentally conscious they are! For every mat that is sold, they will plant a tree! Think if all yoga mat companies would do that – we would easily have a forest growing at this point! These mats are made out of 100% recycled material, are eco-friendly, and non-toxic.
My yoga practice has always been something I work to improve on. I’m naturally pretty flexible and the upper body strength that I have developed through weight training has helped me in yoga immensely. But I really credit yoga for helping me find that needed sense of balance in my life. Every time I step on my mat I’m reminded to be kind to myself, to practice Grace, and to listen to my body for the day.
My practice has certainly progressed from when I first started doing yoga. I remember practice saying crow pose with a bunch of pillows around me and falling all the time. Learning how to do a head stand in a handstand without the wall took a lot of time and practice, not to mention developing core strength.
Most people, especially if they don’t practice yoga think yoga is just about flexibility and doing cool stuff on Instagram. But in reality yoga is about total body strength. I think back to some of my beginning yoga days and the part of class that was often the most challenging for me was the core workout. I quickly realized how weak my core muscles were. At that time I was attending a studio that used the same choreography for each class. Over time I was able to eventually hold the moves for the entire duration of the class. I still remember feeling like a rockstar when I could finally get through the entire core part of the workout. I also noticed that I was able to hold the balance moves much easier with a stronger core.
I thought it would be fun for me to share with you that sequence today you can also start developing your core strength through yoga poses. Pepper decided she wanted to help me today for your entertainment! Isn’t she cute?
We would start and boat to low boat
Then boat to boat with side twist.
Boat to boat with single toe tap
Plank to side plank
Bicycle – keep knees at 90 degrees throughout the exercise. Take elbows to opposite knee instead of knee to elbow.
If boat is too difficult for you, you can start with single leg boat! It definately gets your core engaged! You can do the rest of these moves with your feet on the floor (except for bicycle). For bicycle don’t lower your opposite leg as far but work to get your elbow to your knee!
