When I first started my fitness journey, I was very slow to adapt to protein powder. I’m sure that’s a huge surprise to you guys considering how many protein powder-based recipes I have on the blog, but it really is true. I made the mistake of buying my first protein powder from Walmart, and it was terrible (maybe worse than terrible) and I wrote off protein powder for a good year after that.
I’m sure we’ve all had our share of bad protein powders – you know what I’m talking – chalky, clumpy, it leaves a weird taste in your mouth and possibly worst of all it’s expensive because they are usually 30+ servings at a time. So when you do buy a bad protein powder you’re almost stuck with using it, even though it’s terrible. Honestly I didn’t have money to spend like that.
So if somebody mentioned of their blog or I met someone in the gym and they recommended a brand to me, I would write them down and try things when I saw them on sale. Around the same time, I started learning about clean eating or whole food eating and I was making it a priority to eat food with minimal processed ingredients in them. Unfortunately what I was finding was that the protein recommendations I was getting were full of all these crazy ingredients. I had no idea what they were or why they were needed, but I knew they were not clean eats.
Luckily it’s been quite a few years and times have changed, and there are a ton of great products on the market today. One of my newest obsessions is About Time protein products. I actually tried their cinnamon spice protein powder a couple months ago and it’s perfect for baking!! I love that it’s got coconut flour in it as a natural thickener. Plus, how fantastic is it that it’s cinnamon protein powder. A great change from chocolate and vanilla!
When I saw that About Time was having more products to review I instantly signed up! I could not wait to try their other products. I was over the moon excited when in my box of products was About Time protein pancake mix. You guys know I love protein pancakes. I start every Saturday and Sunday with some version of them. I have to admit these protein pancakes come together a whole up faster than the ones that I make on the weekends. Honestly you measure, you add water, you stir, and you’re done! It’s ready to go on the griddle. I was so impressed with these and the bonus is they are cinnamon, my favorite!. This pancake mix is not only high in protein it is also gluten-free and is packed with some great nutrition and fairly low calories as well!! They are a great way to start your day.
The product I was most intrigued to try was the About Time ProHydrate! You guys may not know this about me but one of the things that I am notorious for is not hydrating properly. So often, I don’t get enough water and a lot of the time I don’t refuel the way I’m supposed to, especially after a really long day of exercise. Trust me, I feel it the next day! Saturdays are probably my worst day, I teach spin for an hour in the morning, then I go lift with Dave later in the day. Often we have errands to run after the gym and it’s an hour or two before I get to eat. Not great for muscle recovery. But that is exactly what ProHydrate is for! This is so different than any other protein drink I’ve had before and it’s in some pretty awesome flavors like Raspberry Lemonade and Orange Mango!! It’s only 95 calories, 20 grams of protein, and only 3 carbs. It’s sweetened with stevia, gluten free, and has no artificial colors or flavors – with an awesome ingredient list! Nothing crazy in there!!

I decided I would make a green smoothie with the raspberry lemonade ProHydrate and it was such a fun change from my usual chocolate or vanilla green smoothies! I added raspberries and the juice of half a lemon to my spinach and flax seed base. I can’t remember the last time I had raspberry lemonade (its usually full of sugar) but I can tell you it was never this healthy!!
